The plan is one of the biggest ones Congress has ever signed and will probably not help you directly unless you do not have a job or you do have one in telecommunications, construction or energy-efficiency industries. Americans purchasing their first home or those making environmentally friendly upgrades will also benefit.
In the meantime, your paycheck might increase due to the "Make Work Pay" credit to the tune of $400 for individuals and $800 for couples who file joint tax returns. This is due to reduced federal payroll taxes and will be retroactive to January 1 and last for the whole year.
Like most tax breaks, there are conditions. Only singles making $75,000 or couples making $150,00 or less qualify.
In reality this is about $15 a week for a year to help low income or middle income households. It is hoped those receiving this credit will save it or use it to pay down some debt. Such a small weekly sum will cost $116 billion nationally for something that won't really make any difference or create any jobs.
Those of fixed incomes, like retired people or disabled folks, will be even worse off, getting just a one time payment $250. They can surely find something to spend it on.
